Today, we spent a good deal of time remembering the events of September 11, 2001. If I continue to teach fourth grade, this will be the last year that I’ll ever have students who were even born before this tragedy. Ten years seem like such a short time and it is in many ways, but things have changed so much in our world that it’s hard to remember how things were before 9/11/01.
I chose not to show any footage from that day but to retell my experience as I watched the events unfold live on TV in front of me. I had just woke up and turned the TV on ABC’s Good Morning America when I saw that there was a fire in one of the Twin Towers. While I was watching the reporters talk about this situation and I saw the 2nd plane crash into the 2nd tower. When that happened, I knew something was very wrong. Our society changed in that hour of one that had no worries about anything of this nature to one that was very afraid and unsure what was in store for our future. The world is still a scary place today but I don’t live in the same fear that gripped our nation during that dark time.
Here are the two resources I used in class to help my students understand what happened on 9/11/2001.
